Wi‑Fi & Home Networking

Work from the outside in: provider line → modem/ONT → router → Wi‑Fi coverage → one device. This prevents factory resets and equipment purchases that cannot fix the actual layer.

Safety first: Do not factory-reset provider or router equipment unless you have the login, Wi‑Fi, WAN, phone/TV, and special configuration needed to rebuild it.

Every device lost internet

Separate an upstream outage from modem synchronization, router failure, and power trouble.

Check these in order

  1. 1Check the provider outage page over cellular data and photograph modem/router light patterns before changing anything.
  2. 2Confirm power, the incoming coax/fibre/phone cable, and the Ethernet cable between modem/ONT and router. Do not sharply bend or unplug fibre connectors.
  3. 3Restart in order once: unplug modem/ONT and router for 60 seconds; power the modem first; wait until fully online; then power the router.
  4. 4If Wi‑Fi remains visible but says no internet, inspect the modem online light and router WAN status. If the Wi‑Fi name vanishes, focus on router power/broadcasting.
  5. 5Contact the provider with the outage result, light pattern, restart time, and whether the modem obtained an online state. Ask for a line/signal test before replacing your router.
What the result means: A modem that never reaches online status points to provider line/provisioning or modem failure. An online modem with a failed router points to WAN cable, router, or configuration. No lights points first to outlet/adapter/power.

Only one device cannot connect

The network is proven to work, so concentrate on that device’s saved profile, VPN, IP settings, and wireless adapter.

Check these in order

  1. 1Restart the device, toggle airplane mode, and verify the date/time is correct. Incorrect time can break secure websites while Wi‑Fi appears connected.
  2. 2Forget the Wi‑Fi network and reconnect with the exact password. Confirm it is your network, not a similarly named guest/extender network.
  3. 3Pause VPN, proxy, private DNS/relay, and security filtering temporarily. Restore them after the comparison.
  4. 4Check that IP and DNS are automatic unless intentionally configured. An address beginning 169.254 often means the device did not receive an address from the router.
  5. 5Test the device on another Wi‑Fi and, if possible, Ethernet. Working elsewhere points to compatibility/router settings; failing everywhere points to the device.
What the result means: Another network working suggests the saved profile, band/security compatibility, or router filtering. No network working suggests device software, driver, or radio hardware. VPN removal fixing it identifies the traffic filter.

Wi‑Fi is weak in part of the home

Test close to the main router before buying extenders; placement and construction decide coverage.

Check these in order

  1. 1Run the same speed/latency test beside the main router and at the problem location using the same device and server.
  2. 2Place the router high, open, central, and away from metal cabinets, concrete, mirrors, aquariums, microwaves, and cordless-phone bases.
  3. 3Use 2.4 GHz for range and basic smart devices; use 5/6 GHz for nearby speed. Higher frequencies usually lose more through walls.
  4. 4Place a mesh node where it still receives a strong upstream signal—not inside the dead zone. Wired backhaul/access points are more reliable when practical.
  5. 5Avoid stacking repeaters. Each wireless hop can add delay and reduce usable capacity; verify improvement with measurements after each change.
What the result means: Good speed near the router and poor speed far away is coverage. Poor speed everywhere is internet/router/congestion. One device alone weak everywhere points to its antenna, case, driver, or radio.

Speed is slow or latency is high

Compare wired versus wireless, one device versus all devices, and quiet versus busy times.

Check these in order

  1. 1Use one wired computer directly to the router where possible. Record download, upload, idle latency, loaded latency, time, and test server.
  2. 2Pause cloud backups, game downloads, cameras uploading, and streaming, then retest. Check the router device list for unknown/high-usage clients.
  3. 3Compare morning, evening, and late-night results. A repeated busy-hour pattern can indicate provider or neighbourhood congestion.
  4. 4If wired is healthy but Wi‑Fi is slow, focus on coverage, interference, channel use, band, and client capability—not the internet plan.
  5. 5Compare measured results to the plan while allowing for protocol overhead. Give the provider multiple wired tests rather than one Wi‑Fi screenshot.
What the result means: Wired and Wi‑Fi both slow points upstream or heavy local traffic. Wired fast/Wi‑Fi slow points to radio conditions. Only one service slow can be that service/server rather than your connection.

Connections drop randomly

Correlate the exact time with modem lights, router logs, device events, power, temperature, and nearby interference.

Check these in order

  1. 1When the drop happens, immediately check whether Wi‑Fi disappears, Wi‑Fi stays connected without internet, or only one app/device fails.
  2. 2Check router uptime/logs and modem lights. If uptime resets, investigate power, heat, adapter, firmware, or hardware stability.
  3. 3Move equipment into ventilation, reseat power and WAN cables, and avoid overloaded/loose power bars.
  4. 4Test close to the router and temporarily pause mesh roaming, VPN, or band steering only one variable at a time.
  5. 5Keep a short log of date, time, affected devices, lights, weather/power events, and recovery method. Patterns make provider support far more effective.
What the result means: All devices losing internet while Wi‑Fi remains points upstream. The Wi‑Fi name vanishing points to router/reboot/power. One device dropping points to its radio/driver/roaming. A location pattern points to coverage/interference.

Secure the router and connected devices

Use practical controls that reduce account, Wi‑Fi, and smart-device risk without making the network impossible to manage.

Check these in order

  1. 1Change default router administration credentials and use a unique Wi‑Fi password. Router admin and Wi‑Fi passwords should not be the same.
  2. 2Use WPA2-AES or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode for compatibility; use WPA3 where every needed device supports it. Disable WEP and old WPA/TKIP.
  3. 3Update router firmware through the official interface. Disable remote administration, WPS, and UPnP unless a documented need outweighs the risk.
  4. 4Put guests and untrusted IoT devices on a guest/isolated network where practical. Review connected devices and remove old port-forwarding rules.
  5. 5Export a safe configuration backup after changes and store recovery details securely. Do not publish screenshots containing public IPs, serials, usernames, or Wi‑Fi keys.
What the result means: Unknown devices may simply have private/randomized names, so identify them before blocking. Reappearing unknown admin changes, DNS settings, or port forwards can indicate compromise and justify a controlled reset/rebuild.
